Rhizomatous perennial 4-6 dm, usually erect and unbranched; lvs ovate, petioled; fls white, 1.5 cm wide; fruiting cal bright red, 5 cm; 2n=24. Native of Eurasia, occasionally escaped from cult. into waste places.
