"Yellow." [Tecumseh collections in Elizabeth Almendinger’s herbarium with no collector noted were likely collected by C. H. Stocking, who collected a number of plants, often at Tecumseh, in 1860 and 1861. These came to the Almendinger Herbarium, typically with Tecumseh abbreviated to “Tec.” On several of the days these were collected, Elizabeth Almendinger was collecting in Ann Arbor, e.g., Aug. 24, 1860, Aug. 29. 1860 “one mile east of Ann Arbor,” September 10 1860, 6 June, 1861 (a date Stocking was collecting in Tecumseh!), It seems an unlikely coincidence that Almendinger was collecting in both Ann Arbor and Tecumseh on these several days and, in fact, Elizabeth Almendinger collected very little outside of the Ann Arbor area. Thus, all Tecumseh specimens in the Almendinger Herbarium are attributed to C. H. Stocking. According to the University of Michigan “Catalogue of Graduates, Non-Graduates…” published in 1923, Charles Henry Stocking graduated in 1861 (A.B.), served during the Civil War as “Asst. Surg.” 1862-1865, received an A.M. in 1865, and an M.D. in 1866. He died in Illinois in 1881. His specimens (1860-1861) were thus evidently collected when he was an undergraduate at the University, and eventually came into the hands of Elizabeth C. Almendinger, with whose herbarium they came to the University. Labels were originally written in a variety of hands. At least one (Helianthus tuberosus) is attributed to “Dr. Stocking,” so must have been labeled after 1866 – unless “Dr.” was applied to any Civil War medic. The collecting locations are mostly Lenawee Co., with a few from southern Washtenaw Co., and adjacent Jackson Co. ]
