Large peat-mound fen ("perched bog") adjacent hard water, spring-fed creek. Woody assoc.: Betula pumila (no B. papyrifera), Cornus racemosa, C. stolonifera, Pentaphylloides floribunda, and Salix bebbiana. Lower edge of thicket at top. I've been in a number of WI fens, and every 2nd or 3rd one contains 1, 2, or 3 of these large-sized, obvious F-1 hybrids. Old broken down, dead trunks make me think DNR managers have tried to kill this plant. Shrub-like tree, stems clumped from base, 6 large ones to 16 ft. tall and 4 in. dbh. plus 10 fast-growing slender sprouts 1/2 in. dbh.; bark dark brown, not separating into layers.
