Common in Quercus woods, in partial shade. Rich sandy loam soils. Trailing herb when over 1 foot tall. Woody canes from a thick rootstock. Leaves rather evergreen when trailing. Leaflets 3 to 5. Thin recurved prickles on stem and petioles, Fruit seedy, ripening rather late.
