Argentina, La Rioja, Originally received into the DBG living collection as a plant from U. C. Berkeley #90-1317 which was originally collected by Sean B. Hogan 3766 from Argentina, La Rioja, 43 KM south of Chilecita on Route 40 in first range of hills in the vicinity of the given coordinates as determined by Google Earth.

Grown in cultivation at Desert Botanical Garden, Phoenix, Maricopa County, AZ, N 33° 27’ 33”, W 111° 56’ 35”, 1200 ft., 366 m; accession number 1993 0835 0102.
Plant shape globose, height 5 inches, width 7.5 inches; stem gray green, rib count 17; spines gray to dark gray or reddish-brown or tan or brown; flowers collected in the afternoon, diameter 17-18 mm, length 56-61 mm with filaments and stigma exerted 11-13 mm beyond, outer perianth reddish-orange with a hint of magenta, inner perianth lighter reddish-orange with a hint of magenta, flower base surrounded by soft, white, wooly glochids; stigma lobe number 10-12, red; style pale orange darkening wiht the age of the flowers; filaments yellow-green at base, reddish-magenta at tops; pollen reddish-violet.
