Flat to Rolling Plains ecoregion; earthen canal and adjacent recreational trail ("Wooded Village" zone, High Line Canal trail), embedded within an urbanized landscape that was historically shortgrass steppe. Canal vegetation composition changes from ruderal grasses and forbs and planted/escaping garden plants (upland areas by trail) to water-loving trees/shrubs and associated understory (lowland areas near canal). Representative trees and shrubs: Populus deltoides, Gleditsia triacanthos, Fraxinus pennsylvanica, Rhamnus cathartica, Lonicera tatarica, Prunus virginiana, escaped Viburnum spp., cultivated Quercus spp. Grasses: managed (planted/mowed) species such as Poa pratensis and Bromus inermis mixed with native Buchloe dactyloides and Bouteloua gracilis; with Phalaris arundinacea and Carex emoryi along canal. Forbs: Heterotheca villosa, several species of Symphyotrichum, Oenothera, and Mirabilis, Solidago gigantea, Erodium cicutarium, Dipsacus laciniatus, Linaria dalmatica.
