Maricopa County: Grown in cultivation at Desert Botanical Garden, Phoenix, N 33 deg 27' 33'', W 111 deg 56' 35'', 1200 ft., 366 m: accession number 1939 0374 0101; originally received as a plant from Mrs. Neff K. Bakkars of San Diego, CA, from a plant not of known wild origin.
Description:
Plant height ca 93 cm, stem columnar, pleated, green, brownish at base; rib count 27; spines gray or brown or reddish-brown (at top) more spines on top 1/3 of plant no spines at base, spines become curly towards base; flower collected in the afternoon, diameter 23 mm, length 75 mm; outer perianth reddish-orange, mostly red, hint ofmagenta at the base and at tips, inner perianth color the same; stigma lobe number 15, red; filaments red; red pollen; thick viscous, sweet nectar.
