Some close low-growing neighbors were Bromus japonicus, Campsis radicans, Smilax bona-nox, Toxicodendron radicans, and Wahlenbergia marginata. Also, early growth of goldenrod. Forest was chiefly water oak, with some sweetgum, mockernut hickory, and muscadine.
Small population of prickly-armed perennials. A large-flowered, fairly showy Solanum. Corolla light violet, each lobe, medially and basally, pale greenish. Anthers yellow,with whitish pollen; some anthers withering darkish brown, starting at tips. Stigma dark green; style and summit of ovary whitish. Pale green of calyces and fl. stalks more or less shaded with a light grayish-purple pigment. Lvs. a medium-light sublustrous green above; a much paler matte green underneath. Many of the plants stellate hairs are short-stipitate. Stems a pallid, glossy green. Hgts. to ca. 2 ft.
