Locally common, hundreds of small trees mostly 1-2 m tall, in understory of Carya aquatic-Fraxinus pensylvanica woodland on alternately submersed and emersed low shoreline of natural pond. Other associates in this habitat include Panicum gymnocarpon, Persicaria punctata, Sapium sebiferum. Also common on embarkment on E side of pond, in the company of weedy species such as Baccharis halamifolia and Sesbania sp.
