Habitat: Rare among protective shrubs in igneous-gravelly soil on S-facing gentle slope of low hill in grassy basin. Grassland of Hilaria swallenii, Bouteloua curtipendula and H. mutica dotted with various shrubs. Other associates include Condalia ericoides, Croton pottsii, Dalea neomexicana, Dyschoriste decumbens, Dyssodia decumbens, Dyssodia pentachaeta, Echinocactus horizonthalonius, Ephedra sp., Euphorbia dentata, Gaura coccinea, Koeberlinia spinosa, Krameria sp., Lesquerella fendleri, Machaeranthera tanacetifolia, Melampodium leucanthum, Mentzelia multiflora, Mimosa aculeaticarpa, Nolina sp., Opuntia sp., Prosopis glandulosa var. torreyana, Psilostrophe tagetina, Tiquilia canescens, Verbena neomexicana, Yucca elata, and Ziziphus obtusifolius.
