Prairie fen runs along Spring Mill Creek. Edges are wooded with oaks. Horribly overgrown with many large areas that were marked as fen, now dense shrub carr. In area dominated by Carex and Typha with a shrub story of Toxicodendron vernix, Cornus and the occasional oak sapling. Ground wet and pooling where we step. Some surface water in quadrat. A nice layer of Sphagnum sp. But not hummocky (tussocks).
Population - mostly vegetative with wide w-shaped leaves, clumps spongy at base, reddish at base, ladder fibrous. Dominant Carex throughout 50m2, many fruiting, but some have already ripened and fell, yellow-green leaves 1.5cm wide.
