Habitat:
Lake side prairie fen. Mostly Cyperaceae, Cornus, and button bush dominated marl zone with some Asteraceae and Dasiphora fruticosa near the wooded borders. Invaded by Phragmites, Phalaris arundinacea, and Frangula alnus. In large southern section of fen in south-central portion, 200m east of Little Portage Lake, 20m north of shrubby area with shrubs and trees over 2m. Some plywood laying across ground. Area dominated by Cladium mariscoides, Spartina pectinata, Iris, and Panicum virgatum. Ground marly, flat, and covered in last year's vegetation. Frangula alnus nearby.
Description:
Inflorescence - raceme of spikes, 1-sided, florets with awned glumes, glumes have ciliate midvein, keeled. Population - one of the two abundant grasses in the area, some over 2m tall, flowering, mostly clumped, thick rhizomes. On marl soil.
