Lax, short-hairy, apparently annual, to 15 cm, often several- stemmed; basal lvs spatulate or broader, to 4 נ1.5 cm, irregularly toothed; cauline lvs often smaller; raceme longer at maturity than the proper stem, openly 4-10-fld; cal 4-5 mm at anthesis, to 9 mm in fr; cor 7-10 mm, blue-violet, marked with yellow and white; 2n=16-52. Lawns and wet bottomlands; native of e. Asia, widely but sparingly intr. in our range. May-Nov. (M. japonicus)
