This specimen represents an entity occasionally encountered that is intermediate between C. brevior and C. molesta. Perigynium morphology is quite intermediate. Pistillate scale lengths and tips are characteristic of C. molesta, as are the achenes, with the largest being less than 1.3 mm wide. A few spikes are club-shaped at the bases (characteristic of C. brevior), but spikes are otherwise characteristic of C. molesta. Inflorescence morphology/spike spacing is more characteristic of C. molesta. All things considered, this specimen more closely aligns with C. molesta. M.J.C. Murphy (ILLS) 6 June 2022.
