Upper half of prairie. With Bouteloua curtipendula, Andropogon scoparius, Sporobolus heterolepis, Carex abdita, C. meadii, Ranunculus rhomboideus, Amorpha canescens, Dodecatheon meadia. Xeric prairie. With Sporobolus heterolepis, lesser amounts of. Sorghastrum, Panicum praecocius, P. leibergii. More or less steep hillside with thin (sandy silt loam, 2-3 in deep) calcareous soil and fragments of limestone bedrock (Platteville dolomite) at the surface. Very common. Dominant, at least at this time of the year, in terms of number of individuals.
