Pasture, part of a grove of ca. 8 trees, mostly larger than this one, which blew down in a storm in the 1960's. Formerly an area of prairie--oak savanna (Q. macrocarpa, Q. ellipsoidalis, Q. alba) prior to European settlement (1840's) and cessation of prairie fires. Most large trees date from ca. 1860s. Quercus velutina not known closer than 1km. from this site. Large tree 18 m. tall, 95 cm. in diameter.
