Locality: Mexico, Baja California Sur, Maricopa County: Grown in cultivation at Desert Botanical Garden, Phoenix, N 33 deg 27' 33'', W 111 deg 56' 35'', 1200 ft., 366 m: accession number 2009 0064 0101; originally received as a plant collected by Marc Baker 12173, 5 February 1996, with Robert Johnson, from Mexico, Baja California Sur, just west of Santa Maria Wash, ca 22k N of San Ignacio San Ignacio; 27.4167 deg N, 112.8042 deg. W, elevation 300 m, 980 ft.; collectors notes: flats of basalt cobbles, locally abundant shrub to 2 m tall, as broad; trunk 6 dm dia; primary branches spreading-ascending; secondary branches divaricate, brown-purple in this individual; ultimate branches not easily detached, except for the shortest; fruit broadly obovate, leathery, tuberculate; tepals yellow-green, glossy, tinged red-brown near apex and dorsally, especially on the outer ones, filaments yellow-green, style and stigma very pale yellow-green; associated plants-Ambrosia bryantii, Atriplex, Bursera microphylla, Cercidium microphyllum, Cylindropuntia molesta, Echinocereus, Ferocactus, Fouquieria diguetii, Jatropha cuneata, Lemaireocereus thruberi, Lophocereus schottii, Machaerocereus gummosus, and Pachycereus pringlei.

Description: Single stemmed plant with multiple side branches, stems gray-green, slightly tuberculate; spines golden or gray with sheaths; flowers collected mid-morning to mid-day, flower diameter 34-44 mm, length 36-40 mm, outer perianth dark yellow-green or bright lime green with reddish-green midstripe, inner perianth dark yellow-green or bright lime green with darker green midstripe; stigma lobe number 6-7, color light yellow-green, pale green or light yellow; style pale green; filaments green; anthers yellow; fruit fleshy, tuberculate, yellow-green, diameter 18 mm, length 25 mm, seed tan.
Occurrence Remarks: Sheet II/II. Sheet I/II has the flowers and fruit and is DES 62963.
