Locality: Mexico, Baja California Sur, Maricopa County: Grown in cultivation at Desert Botanical Garden, Phoenix, N 33 deg 27' 33'', W 111 deg 56' 35'', 1200 ft., 366 m: accession number 1993 0583 0101; originally received as a plant collected by Marc Baker 8711. 29 February 1992, from Mexico, Baja California Sur, just south of Mex 1, in Santa Maria Wash between Cerro Colorado and Cerro Guatamote, just east of Meas San Regis, 8.3 miles ENE of Guamuchil and ca. 8 miles ENE of San Ingnaciao; 7 deg 19' 30'' N, 112 deg 46' 30'' W, elevation 180 m; collector's notes: flood plains with Opuntia cholla, Lophocereus schottii, Prosopis, Hymenoclea, Larrea tridentata, Lupinus, Pachycereus pringlei, Cecidium microphyllum, Jatropa cinerea, Acacia greggii and Ambrosia; plant data: densely-branched shurb 1.4 m tall, 2 m broad, stems grenerally whorled, slightly arched, ca 45 deg to main stem axis, stems yellow-green, glaucous, spines white to pale straw; sheath similar to spines in color; fruit leathery, persistent (some drying on plant), green-yellow to yellow-green, tuberculate, spineless or with a few deciduous spines; 28 fruit examined, 17 with seeds ranging from 1-38, most less than 10, 11 fruit with no seeds; flowers just beginning to open, inner tepals yellow-green, suffused with purple-red; filaments dark yellow-green; anthers yellow; style green below, cream white above; stigma pale green tinged red-purple; cloning form fallen branches; x=11.

Description: Flowers collected mid-afternoon; flower diameter 36-41 mm, length 31-39 mm, outer perianth pale green with reddish-brown midstripe, inner perianth plae green with wide reddish-brown midstripe; stigma lobe number 4-5, color yellow-green, thigmotrophic positive, stigma lobes are all curled; filaments green; stems green with reddish-purple on dorsal side of stem, possibly from sun damage; spines white, gray, reddish-brown or dark brown; fleshy fruit collected by Joni Ward, 7 October 2008, diameter 17-23 mm, length 17-37 mm, color green or yellow-green, two fruit were long and stem-like, one of which had a seed.
