Habitat: Culms 4' tall, blue-glaucous below nodes; frequent in mix of short- and mid-grasses in grassland component of open juniper-oak woodland on gravelly soils derived from rhyolite on gentle slope and valley flat. Associates include Aristida purpurea, A. ternipes, Bothriochloa barbinodis, Bouteloua curtipendula, B. gracilis, B. hirsuta, Chamaesyce serpyllifolia, Cyperus fendlerianus, Echeandia flavescens, Eragrostis intermedia, Evolvulus sericeus, Juniperus deppeana, Krameria lanceolata, Lobelia fenestralis, Lycurus setosus, Opuntia imbricata, Panicum hallii, Panicum obtusum, Pinus sp., Pseudognaphalium viscosum, Pseudognaphalium viscosum, Quercus emoryi, Q. grisea, Schizachyrium sp., Sida neomexicana.
Reproductive Condition: fruiting=late
