Habitat: Floodplain just above water level with Betula occidentalis, Salix sp., Penstemon barbatus, Glycyrrhiza lepidota, Sphenopholis obtusa, Sporobolus airoides; rhizomatous in occasional patches; staminate plant; flowers pink; widespread.
Substrate: Quaternary terrace deposits derived from surrounding Precambrian granite hills and Tertiary intrusive volcanic rock
